Climate Protection: Our Measures

Climate Protection: Our Measures

Energy Consumption in Our Stores

By 2030, we aim to reduce our electricity consumption per square meter of retail space (in kWh/m²) in Austria by 10% compared to 2019. We have already achieved this goal; by 2025, we had already reduced it by 15%.

We also aim to reduce our fossil fuel consumption for heating in Austria by 20% compared to 2019. We have already exceeded this target as well, achieving a 21.2% reduction.

CO2 as a Refrigerant in New BILLA and PENNY Stores

CO2 is used as a refrigerant⁴ in all new BILLA buildings, including BILLA Kaufleute stores and PENNY locations, as it is the refrigerant with the lowest global warming potential. By 2025, approximately 23% of the stores were already using CO2 as a refrigerant. In this way, the REWE GROUP in Austria aims to counteract Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions—of which refrigerant leaks are a major contributing factor.

Scope 1 = Direct emissions, such as those from energy sources at the company’s sites and its own vehicle fleets.

E-Mobility

E-mobility is another key area. By 2025, 613 charging stations were available to customers at the stores. Following the successful testing of electric trucks in recent years, four electric trucks were in service by the end of 2025 to deliver goods to stores. By 2026, the fleet had already grown to nine electric trucks.

Electricity from 100% renewable energy sources (certificate of origin in accordance with EU Directive 2018/2001)

100% of the electricity for our own stores comes from renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy, hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, or biomass. As early as 2008, BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA, PENNY, and ADEG—as industry pioneers—completely switched to green electricity from EHA Austria Energiehandels GmbH (EHA) in all their stores.
