Press Release 18th February 2021

Green labels for sustainable BIPA products

The number of different quality labels and seals for sustainable products has increased significantly in recent years. To make it easier for customers to find their way around when shopping, BIPA now has around 1,100 products marked with a green label. The basis for this is the Greenpeace quality label guide.

In this Greenpeace has compiled a list of quality labels that are commonly used in the drugstore trade and evaluated them according to clearly defined criteria. Every product that bears at least one quality mark that has been assessed as trustworthy by Greenpeace is given a green label.

"Customers' need for transparency is growing and sustainability is already strongly anchored in people's minds."

Thomas Lichtblau Spokesman of the BIPA management

"Customers' need for transparency is growing and sustainability is already strongly anchored in people's minds. The Corona crisis has further strengthened the topic", explains Thomas Lichtblau, spokesman for the BIPA management, and adds: "However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for shoppers to find their way around a multitude of quality labels. Thanks to the green label, our customers can be really sure that the environment has been taken into account in the selection of the ingredients as well as in the production of these products.

Greenpeace tested according to strict criteria

Greenpeace, the independent and internationally recognised environmental organisation, tested quality labels and assessed how trustworthy they are. These were classified as "dark green" - very trustworthy, "green" - trustworthy, "yellow" - conditionally trustworthy, "orange" - not very trustworthy and "red" - not trustworthy.

"We are pleased that BIPA is now providing better transparency on the shelves."

"With our label check 'Zeichen-Tricks' we offer orientation in the quality label jungle for cosmetics, cleaning products and co. We are pleased that BIPA is now providing better transparency on the shelves based on this. The green labels can help customers to recognise environmentally friendly products at first glance and to avoid those with untrustworthy quality labels," says Sophie Lampl, Programme Director at Greenpeace.

Around 1,100 products carry green labels and make shopping easier

In the approximately 600 BIPA shops throughout Austria, the green labels now serve as an orientation aid when shopping for sustainable products. For the time being, there are about 1,100 products to choose from that have at least one quality label rated as trustworthy by Greenpeace. At the same time, a new filter function, which allows you to search for "green products", was installed in the BIPA Online Shop. If you are particularly interested in natural cosmetics, you can already filter for "certified natural cosmetics". All designated products have in common that they bear at least one quality mark which has been assessed as trustworthy by Greenpeace.

"Sustainability is an important topic for us. That is why the ongoing expansion and further development of our sustainability range is a core element of our corporate strategy. It is therefore of great concern to us to inspire our customers to favour sustainable products," informs Thomas Lichtblau.
