Since 2012, the non-profit educational initiative Teach For Austria has been supporting young people from socially disadvantaged and educationally deprived families in school and extracurricular activities throughout the year. Also during the summer holidays: This year, 100 pupils aged 10 to 16 took part in a ten-day support programme, the so-called summer weeks. These were organised together with the Vienna Hobby Lobby at the end of July/beginning of August. In the morning, the young people were supported in refreshing and strengthening the year's material in English, German and mathematics, while in the afternoon the young adults' potentials and strengths were promoted in extracurricular areas - among others in courses such as acting, kickboxing and street art. The offer was free of charge, with the aim of also relieving parents of the burden of looking after their children and breaking down access barriers.
1,000 bags for a healthy snack
To ensure that the young people could get through the day with a lot of energy, BILLA was happy to provide them with a free snack bag every day, filled with bread rolls and fresh fruit, among other things. These were freshly prepared every day by the staff of the BILLA stores at Thomas Klestil Platz 15 (Landstraße) and Erlachgasse 5 (Favoriten) and delivered to the schools at Kempelengasse 20 (Landstraße) and Markhofgasse 19 (Favoriten).
BILLA Head of Sales Hermann Weiß describes: "The last months were a really challenging time for all pupils. Especially for those who already have a hard time at school. That's why I'm all the more pleased that we were able to make a small contribution with this campaign to support the participating young people in their learning. A balanced diet is important for a healthy body and mind and thus contributes significantly to learning success."
Severin Broucek, Managing Director of Teach For Austria, is pleased about the support: "This year, the Teach For Austria x Vienna Hobby Lobby Summer Weeks focused on educational equality and promoting the strengths of young people from disadvantaged social backgrounds. We are very pleased that BILLA has supported us in this endeavour with its donation of snack packets - many thanks also to the employees who lovingly prepared the packets."
