Press Release 10th August 2023

Reopening: After a renovation break of almost two weeks, the PENNY store in Vienna's Hosnedlgasse reopens with its variety of products at discount prices

At the beginning of August, the PENNY store at Hosnedlgasse 2 in Vienna's Donaustadt district opens as a regional local supplier with around 1,900 products on more than 560 m2 of sales floor space. This means that the unique service offer is also moving back in: Fresh produce heroes provide fresh fruit and vegetables all day long. Customers can place individual meat orders with specially trained store managers. The pork, chicken, and beef offered under the private label "Ich bin Österreich" is 100% Austrian and slaughtered in Austria.

"My team and I are looking forward to welcoming PENNY customers back to our store and providing them with expert advice as well as an attractive private label and comprehensive brand assortment," says store manager Abdullah Al Karim Al Hamad. The PENNY location in Vienna's Hosnedlgasse secures seven jobs and a total of 65 in the Donaustadt district.

Domestic Product Diversity is in PENNY

PENNY relies on high-quality products from its own regional brand "Ich bin Österreich" ("I am Austria") with over 200 items from reliable domestic production and in the organic segment with its own brand "ECHT BIO!" ("REAL BIO!"). PENNY bakes the bread freshly in the store, mainly from Austrian bakers. With "Food For Future", the brand discounter has its own vegan, climate-neutral brand. The motto is variety instead of abandonment: pea-based vegan mince, vegan meat sausage, oat milk or vegan cheese underline the product variety.

"We are proud that PENNY is bringing even more freshness and regional products to Vienna Donaustadt. Our customers get great private labels as well as well-known brands at the best price-performance ratio," says PENNY Managing Director Kai Pataky.

PENNY supports social projects and focuses on sustainability

As a partner of the Austrian Red Cross, PENNY is committed to helping society. Initiatives such as the PENNY Family Relief Fund support people in emergency situations. As a member of the klima:aktiv pakt2020 of the Federal Ministry for Sustainability, PENNY has committed itself to using resources sparingly and reducing CO2 emissions. For example, the entire PENNY store network is supplied with 100 percent green electricity. The reduction of plastic is also a concern for the brand discount store: 127 tons of fruit and vegetables have already been saved since 2018.

The PENNY and Waldquelle bottle cap forest

Together with Waldquelle Mineralwasser, PENNY is also collecting for the joint bottle cap forest. The collection boxes specially provided for this purpose are also available at the newly opened store in Vienna Donaustadt. Beverage caps can still be handed in here until autumn. From the PENNY store, the route leads directly to the recycling plant. The raw material is processed and prepared for reuse. With the net proceeds from the recycled stoppers, regional foresters and students, together with Waldquelle Mineralwasser and PENNY, plant new trees in Vienna, Burgenland, Lower Austria, Styria and Carinthia. In this way, forest areas damaged by climate change are reforested.
