Press Release 11th January 2024

BILLA and its customers collected over 122,000 euros for people in need

For BILLA, assuming social responsibility is a matter of course. This is why BILLA supports initiatives and aid organizations throughout the year - also in the context of donation campaigns, where BILLA customers make their generous contribution. In order to support families and people in need in challenging times and in the face of inflation, BILLA is once again launching the donation campaign "A donation that fills you up" with Team Österreich Tafel of the Red Cross and Hitradio Ö3 this year. In December, customers were able to donate five or ten euros at all BILLA and BILLA PLUS checkouts as part of the campaign. Thanks to the customers' commitment and an additional corporate donation from BILLA amounting to 22,000 euros, a total of 122,180 euros was raised.

Laura-Marie Krismer (BILLA Store Manager), Robert Nagele (BILLA Board Member for Real Estate & Sustainability), Eva Kimmes (Corporate Cooperation and Events at the Austrian Red Cross) and Manfred Kumer (Head of the Philanthropy and Corporate Cooperation Department at the Austrian Red Cross) are delighted to have raised 122,180 euros for people in need.

The amount is distributed directly to people in need in the form of basic foodstuffs and hygiene products by Team Österreich Tafel. The so-called at-risk-of-poverty threshold (60 percent of the median income according to Statistics Austria) serves as a guide.

Robert Nagele, BILLA Board Member for Real Estate and Sustainability: "At BILLA, we see it as our responsibility to help where it is urgently needed in the spirit of cooperation. We achieve this throughout the year with various fundraising campaigns and with the great support of our customers. The last campaign in December once again impressively demonstrated what is possible with teamwork. I would like to thank our customers for setting an example of charity with their donations. Thanks to their generous donations, we can provide 122,180 euros for people in need."

Around 6,000 volunteers from food banks across Austria distribute donations

"Many of our fellow human beings are threatened by poverty due to past and present crises. At our Team Austria food banks, we have noticed that the need for support remains at a very high level. It is very important to the Red Cross to provide rapid and low-threshold help in these difficult times. Especially in times of crisis, we must not look away, but work together to support people in need. We would therefore like to thank all BILLA customers who have made an important contribution with their donations during the Christmas period," says Michael Opriesnig, Secretary General of the Austrian Red Cross.

Since 2010, Team Österreich Tafeln, a joint initiative of the Red Cross and Hitradio Ö3, has been collecting food that is in perfect condition but can no longer be sold. A total of 123 distribution points supply 26,700 households across Austria. In 2022 alone, there were 413,470 food collections from the Team Österreich food banks. The almost 6,000 volunteers worked more than 400,000 volunteer hours for Team Österreich Tafeln in 2022. The goods are donated by supermarkets such as BILLA and BILLA PLUS, local grocery stores, bakers, vegetable growers or directly by the producers. As long as food is in stock, Team Österreich Tafel's offer is available to those people who need this support.
