A functioning local supply system is essential for Austria's communities and even vital for the survival of smaller towns. The fact that this important task would not be possible without women is not only evident at ADEG on International Women's Day on 8 March: of the almost 350 locations in Austria, 113 stores - almost a third - are currently run by women. More and more women are opening stores. In fact, there are almost more women than men at the helm of the new and remodelled stores opened in 2023 and expected to be opened in 2024. REWE Wholesale Managing Director Jürgen Öllinger is delighted: "It makes me really proud to see how many great and committed women at ADEG represent the values that our company has always stood for on a daily basis: a passion for local food, commitment to the region and a feeling for our fellow human beings. We know what an indispensable role women play for ADEG. For this reason, we are constantly developing our working models and career opportunities to make them more flexible and improve the compatibility of family, private life and career."
Concentrated female power at ADEG Hörbinger
One example of the great contribution that women make every day to local supply and beyond in the communities is the 28-year-old ADEG saleswoman Christina Hörbinger in St. Peter am Kammersberg (Murau district) and her all-female team. Social interaction plays an important role at ADEG Hörbinger: "Everyone in our store knows everyone else, so socialising and personal interaction are very important when shopping. Without my great employees, who know our customers and on whom I can always rely, the warm atmosphere here would not be possible. Their commitment and expertise make a significant contribution to the success of our store. For me, they emphasise how important women are in social and professional life, and not just on International Women's Day," explains Christina Hörbinger.
New PV system since February 2024
As a modern and responsible ADEG retailer, Christina Hörbinger not only supports local suppliers, but also makes a significant contribution to the energy transition in the community. As part of the renovation of her store, the entire lighting was converted to LED and the refrigeration technology was replaced with energy-saving appliances. In addition, triple-glazed windows and an appropriately insulated entrance door contribute to improved thermal efficiency. Electronic price tags also reduce paper consumption. In February 2024, ADEG Hörbinger also completed its own PV system on the roof and façade, which will cover the majority of electricity consumption from now on: "With my daily work, I not only want to support the people in my community, but also encourage women who want to start their own business. Accordingly, I am also pleased that there are more and more female shop assistants and female entrepreneurs at ADEG who are getting involved inside and outside the stores," says the ADEG saleswoman.
