Twice a day, 1-3 minutes: BIPA survey on Dental Health Day reveals Austrians' dental care routines

September 25 is Dental Health Day. BIPA has taken this as an opportunity to take a closer look at Austrians' tooth brushing habits. Dentists will be pleased with the results, as the majority of Austrians (68%) brush their teeth twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. 16% only brush their teeth in the morning and 9% only brush their teeth before going to bed. Only 4 percent of respondents do not even brush their teeth at all on some days.

Auf einen Blick

  • 70 per cent of respondents brush their teeth twice a day, with the majority taking between one and three minutes

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste are the number one care products - less than half use mouthwash or dental floss

  • A third are afraid of going to the dentist, while almost 40 per cent complain about the high cost of dental treatment

  • BIPA offers innovative dental care products at a low price with BI LIFE DENT

The majority of respondents also agree on their brushing habits: toothbrushes (94%) and toothpaste (93%) are the preferred products for daily dental hygiene. Just under four in ten Austrians (39%) brush for one to two minutes, while the majority, namely 42 per cent, are in the ideal range of two to three minutes. 5 per cent clean for longer than three minutes. 4 per cent of Austrians brush their teeth in less than one minute.

Favourite products for a radiant smile

It is no surprise that toothbrushes are the most popular dental care product. Manual toothbrushes and electric models share the popularity scale with 50 per cent each. Mouthwashes (46 per cent) and dental floss (36 per cent) are now only an integral part of the bathroom routine for less than half of Austrians. Care routines using tongue scrapers (8%) or mouth pulling oil (3%) are even less common, and yet they offer advantages for comprehensive oral hygiene.

While 41 per cent of Austrians visit the dentist at least once a year, 27 per cent even more frequently, 4 per cent of respondents avoid dentists altogether. For 37 per cent of respondents, the biggest challenge in maintaining dental health is the high cost of dental treatment, while more than a quarter (29%) also state that they are afraid of going to the dentist. One in ten struggle with a lack of time or lack of knowledge about proper dental care.

Dr Silke Spanlang, dentist and dental health expert, recommends: "Regular tooth brushing, supplemented by dental floss or interdental sticks, is the key to healthy teeth and a radiant smile. Investing three minutes twice a day in dental care protects against tooth decay and tartar build-up and strengthens the gums. A good toothpaste doesn't have to be expensive. With products such as BI LIFE DENT Complete toothpaste, you have optimum all-round protection."
