Press Release 5th March 2025

REWE Group promotes preventive healthcare for women

The health of employees is a top priority at REWE Group and its retail companies BILLA, PENNY and BIPA, and not just on International Women's Day. One example of this is the Preventive Health Care Day: a paid day for the health of employees. A preventive check-up should be carried out regularly from the age of 30, because your own health is paramount. At REWE Group, employees in the shops or at the head office do not have to take a day off for this, but are given one day off a year to dedicate to preventive healthcare.

Support for mental and physical health

Since 2021, ‘Mavie’, a programme for mental health at work, has been supporting REWE Group employees in actively shaping their mental and physical health. ‘Mavie’ offers confidential, anonymous and free counselling in several languages. REWE Group employees also have a wide range of support options for physical health, such as discounted sports programmes (e.g. with the jö.SPORTPASS) and personal advice on ergonomics in the workplace.

BILLA health ambassadors get started

In cooperation with the Stadtmenschen project of Social City Wien, BILLA employees are being trained as health ambassadors. The aim is to provide information about cancer prevention - especially breast cancer screening. According to the Ministry of Health, only 40 per cent of women in Austria take the opportunity to have a mammogram. For women with a migrant background in particular, there are often barriers to accessing health information and screening programmes.

PENNY stands up for employees

PENNY is also actively committed to the well-being of its employees and offers the Health Day for all employees, both at the head office and in the shops. This year, the discounter is emphasising the importance of taking advantage of the day to promote personal health for the approximately 2,100 female employees.

Women at REWE Group

On International Women's Day, a look at the REWE Group team in Austria shows: as one of the largest employers in the country, more than 47,000 employees work in all stores, branches and at the head office. Of these, 70 per cent are women, who ensure the supply and advice of customers in the more than 2,000 locations and perform a significant proportion of the work. In addition, over 52 per cent of the teams in stores, branches and the head office are led by women.

REWE Group wants to create an environment that offers optimal working conditions, equal opportunities and creative freedom for all employees, regardless of whether they work in the shops of the trading companies or at headquarters. The compatibility of work and family is essential in this context. 62 per cent of all female employees work part-time.

Support for women at REWE Group

The external award from the Family and Career Audit confirms REWE Group's successful approach. Examples of real, effective support offers include flexible working time models (also for managers), the option of mobile working, childcare during the Easter and autumn holidays, various holiday camps for employees' children and tailored advice for managers in all matters from the HR Business Partners. REWE Group also offers its employees up to three months of care leave for children or relatives.

Specific training programmes such as ‘Know Yourself, Develop Yourself’ and ‘Career Turbo’ for women help women advance their careers. Since 2017, the one-year ‘Women's Drive’ programme has specifically strengthened women in management roles. It consists of several seminars and accompanying mentoring from internal managers. Transparent career paths at REWE Group ensure that women can realise their full potential as managers sustainably and at all levels of the company.

REWE internal women* network f.ernetzt

At f.ernetzt, the focus is on connecting women with each other, planning joint events and providing an insight into the lives and working environments of women in leadership positions through interviews so that other women can learn and be inspired. In addition, f.ernetzt offers its members various events and lectures to educate them on topics such as women's health, violence against women and further training programmes in the area of finance and investments.

Promotion in the online shop of BILLA and BIPA on the occasion of International Women's Day

REWE Group is constantly working to close the internal gender pay gap with clear and more comparable job worlds (according to Statistik Austria 2023 the Austrian gender pay gap is 12.18 per cent). To set an example for the importance of fair pay for women, BILLA and BIPA will take 12.18 per cent of customers' online shop orders on International Women's Day.
