Press Release 25th February 2026

BILLA guarantees 100% of its eggs come from Austria – even at Easter

BILLA consistently focuses on fresh eggs from Austria, thereby making a clear commitment to domestic agriculture. Even during the Easter period, when demand for eggs in the markets traditionally increases by around 50 per cent, BILLA reliably ensures that the shelves are filled exclusively with fresh eggs of Austrian origin. Around Easter, the food retailer purchases around 10.5 million Easter eggs from domestic farms, which are also dyed and packaged in Austria.

The total annual purchase volume of eggs amounts to around 260 million, of which around 250 million are fresh eggs, with around 62% coming from organic and free-range farms and 38% from barn farms. BILLA thus generates around €55 million in added value for domestic agriculture each year and purchases around 13% of domestic eggs.

Erich Szuchy, CEO of BILLA: "Even though demand increases significantly during the Easter period, we remain committed to Austrian agriculture and only offer domestic fresh and Easter eggs. We have been working with many farms for many years and are seeing an increase in the number of regional suppliers supplying markets in their region. This year, we are once again ensuring that our customers are supplied with eggs that are 100% sourced from Austria for Easter."

BILLA sends a strong signal for animal welfare and better husbandry standards

BILLA also took decisive steps early on in terms of animal welfare. Back in 1996, BILLA was the first food retailer in Austria to stop selling cage eggs – long before this became standard practice in supermarkets and discount stores.

For decades, BILLA has been committed to sustainably improving conditions for farm animals. With a 50 per cent share of sales revenue in the fresh meat segment at BILLA, animal welfare is no longer a niche market.

With its decision to focus exclusively on fresh meat from Austria, BILLA took on a pioneering role in Austrian food retail in 2020. All BILLA, BILLA PLUS and BILLA Kaufleute stores sell only fresh meat from animals that were born, raised and processed in Austria. This applies not only to beef, veal and pork, but across all meat categories – including chicken, turkey, duck, goose, game and lamb. The Mercosur Agreement will not change this commitment to Austrian agriculture. BILLA is the first and so far only food retailer in Austria to offer fresh meat – including poultry and promotional items – exclusively from Austria.
