International Women's Day: One third of self-employed ADEG retailers are female

Since 1911, International Women's Day has been used as an international platform to highlight women's achievements, draw attention to discrimination and call for social action on women's rights. The motto for 2026 – ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL women and girls’ – sums up this aspiration: securing rights, strengthening justice, taking responsibility. At ADEG, this aspiration is visible in everyday life, where management, organisation and decision-making take place on a daily basis, namely in the markets. Around a third of ADEG's independent retailers are women. The ADEG brand thus stands for a working environment in which female managers are a reality. ADEG's independent retailers ensure local supply, create jobs and are a reliable point of contact for many people in the community.

At a glance

  • International Women's Day on 8 March 2026 has the motto ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL women and girls’ and focuses on equality and concrete action worldwide.

  • At ADEG, around 33% of independent retailers are women.

  • Two examples from Bernhardsthal (Lower Austria) and Altenstadt (VBG) show how independent ADEG retailers ensure local supply and take on responsibility as local employers.

Businesswomen who embrace responsibility

Clarissa Greiner is an impressive example of a successful ADEG saleswoman. In October 2025, she took over the ADEG store in Bernhardsthal (Mistelbach district, Lower Austria). After completing her apprenticeship and several years as deputy store manager, she was a fixture in Bernhardsthal and the first point of contact for many people in the store. When no successor was in sight, the wish of many customers was clear: Clarissa Greiner should lead the store into the future. ‘I think it's important for young women to see that leadership responsibility is not a question of age. International Women's Day stands for courage and self-determination, and that's exactly what I experience every day as an independent ADEG saleswoman. I can shape, decide and take responsibility,’ says Clarissa Greiner proudly.

Brigitte Hubmann in Altenstadt (Feldkirch district, Vorarlberg) also stands for active entrepreneurial commitment in her region. She has been working in retail for over 30 years and has been running her ADEG market as an independent ADEG businesswoman for more than two decades. Continuity, trust and personal service characterise her daily work. ‘I really appreciate the direct contact with the people in our community. Here, everyone knows each other, everyone sticks together and everyone grows together in the face of challenges – that's what makes my job so valuable to me,’ says Brigitte Hubmann, describing her role as a businesswoman.

A strong, female network

Whether as ADEG sales assistants, deputy market managers or employees, women at ADEG are characterised by their innovative strength, sense of responsibility and keen intuition for the people in their communities. With a great deal of commitment, organisational talent and passion, they ensure that a grocery store becomes a place of encounter. Without their daily work, comprehensive, personal and local supply would be inconceivable. ADEG sees itself as a reliable partner that adapts the framework conditions so that women can take on responsibility, grow entrepreneurially and go their own way.

Florian Klein, Managing Director of REWE Wholesale, emphasises this claim: "At ADEG, we understand equal opportunities to be much more than a buzzword; it is a conviction we live by. For us, it is a matter of course that women take on responsibility, contribute their strengths and follow their own entrepreneurial path. My special thanks go to all those female businesswomen, colleagues and employees who, with competence, commitment and a great deal of passion, make our markets strong local suppliers and lively meeting places in their communities every day."
