Press Release 6th October 2021

Second chance for fresh fruit and vegetables

Under the motto "GUTES RETTEN" ("SAVING GOOD"), BILLA is extending the offer of the popular fruit and vegetable boxes, which are already on sale in eight Styrian BILLA stores, across Styria into Burgenland. This means that diverse fruit and vegetable cisterns full of perfect fruit and vegetables are now available in 19 more BILLA markets for the price of three euros and are thus saved from being thrown away.

In the spirit of sustainability, BILLA is once again fighting food waste: Since July 2021, a wide variety of fruit and vegetables have been put together into a colourful mix directly on site in eight selected BILLA stores in Styria and offered for sale in boxes for only three euros. Every piece of fruit and vegetable that goes into the boxes is unpackaged, fresh and perfectly edible in terms of quality. So apples, peppers, plums, potatoes, bananas and co. get a second chance and are offered at a reduced selling price.

"Food is a valuable resource and therefore we see it as our important task to take responsibility and create more and more sustainable options in our daily shopping."

Peter Gschiel Head of Sales BILLA

"Food is a valuable resource and therefore we see it as our important task to take responsibility and create more and more sustainable options in our daily shopping," says Peter Gschiel, BILLA Head of Sales. As a food retailer, it is a major concern for BILLA to avoid food waste as much as possible. In 2020 alone, the BILLA family donated food worth around 22 million euros. Due to the positive customer response, the fruit and vegetable boxes will be expanded to a further 19 locations in Styria and will also be offered in Burgenland for the first time.

"We are very pleased that we can make a contribution to more resource conservation and thus more sustainability with this campaign," agree BILLA store manager in Graz-Mariatroster Straße 142 Elisabeth Heigl and BILLA freshness manager Andrea Schlatzer. "The boxis very well received by our customers - we get a lot of positive feedback that the fruit and vegetable box are a great idea to avoid food waste."
