Saghi Froughivand, head of the filling station business in Austria said: "We want to offer our customers the possibility to charge electricity where they need it at the moment, in order to make the switch to a battery electric vehicle easier. Whether it's a charging option at home, while shopping or at an ultrafast charging point at the petrol station, we want to offer the best solution for everyone."
"We are pleased to be able to play an active role in the energy transition with our trading companies. By expanding the e-charging network at our locations, we are contributing together with Shell to making a significant contribution to climate protection and mobility in the future," said Marcel Haraszti, REWE International AG Executive Board Member.
Shell wants to become a company with net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. One building block is the development of a broad charging offer for electric vehicles. In 2017, Shell acquired NewMotion, then Europe's largest charging provider, which has since been renamed Shell Recharge and also operates in Austria. In 2021, Shell bought Berlin-based startup ubitricity, which enable charging at lampposts. Recently, Shell acquired SBRS GmbH, the leading provider of charging infrastructure solutions for e-buses and e-trucks. There is also a cooperation agreement with IONITY, the joint venture of Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, Hyundai, Porsche and VW. This joint venture builds fast-charging pillars along motorways in European countries. The first of these went online in 2018 in Hohenems/Vorarlberg at a Shell station. The Shell Recharge fast-charging stations now planned at supermarkets in Austria will expand the offering for on-the-go needs. Shell's global target is to have over 500,000 charging points by 2025 and over 2,500,000 by 2030.
For REWE International AG, climate protection has long since ceased to be a niche topic - protecting the environment and conscious consumption are high on the agenda of consumers. REWE Group in Austria has been committed to sustainability for many years and has set itself a high goal: to become climate-neutral by 2040. In order to achieve this goal together with our partners and customers, every detail counts. As a partner of the klimaaktiv 2030 pact, REWE International AG supports the energy transition together with other companies. For example, BILLA, BILLA PLUS, PENNY, BIPA and ADEG use 100 per cent green electricity from Austria in their own stores. More than half of all shops are already energy-efficient. The expansion of photovoltaic systems is also an important part of the location concept - 85 projects will be implemented this year alone. By the end of the year, more than 200 photovoltaic systems will be installed on the roofs of REWE Group trading companies.
