107 apprentices are currently completing their training at PENNY throughout Austria. The discounter is offering 65 new apprenticeships this year: 50 in the retail trade specialising in food and 15 in meat sales. PENNY attaches great importance to sound training, particularly in the area of meat sales, as skilled labour is in high demand here.
We are looking for young people who enjoy working with customers, are enthusiastic about food and want a secure career with prospects in retail. ‘Our apprentices are an integral part of the team right from the start. They take on responsibility early on and are specifically prepared for future management positions,’ says Kai Pataky, PENNY Managing Director Austria.
Attractive remuneration for apprentices: PENNY invests in the future
PENNY is sending a strong signal in favour of apprenticeship training: From September 2025, apprentices in their first year of training will receive 1,270 euros per month - meaning that the discounter will pay 270 euros above the collective agreement. Existing apprentices will also benefit from this commitment: Apprentice pay for the second year of apprenticeship will rise to 1,350 euros, which is 180 euros above the collective agreement. PENNY is thus making a targeted investment in motivated junior staff and emphasising its attractiveness as a training company.

From apprenticeship to manager
Committed apprentices have the opportunity to quickly climb the career ladder at PENNY. From the apprenticeship, they go on to become deputies, store managers or even sales representatives. Internal preparatory courses lasting several days in the final year and the assumption of costs for the final apprenticeship examination (LAP) ensure that apprentices are optimally prepared.
The central apprenticeship officers at PENNY ensure that training in the shops is of the highest standard - in close co-operation with the sales department.
Successful careers start with the right decision
Many managers at PENNY started out as apprentices themselves. One of them is Thomas Ruhmer, Sales Manager Penny Meat, who started out as an apprentice in the meat department and now holds a management role: ‘The future is not a stroke of fate, but the result of the decisions we make today. An apprenticeship in meat sales at PENNY is more than just a job - it's a chance to learn a real trade, take on responsibility and build a secure future with excellent career opportunities. I started as an apprentice myself and I know that if you're passionate about what you do, you can achieve a lot here.’
