PENNY boss at the checkout – the team enjoys a day off

A special role reversal – a long-standing tradition at PENNY. On July 10, the PENNY store day took place for the seventh time. On this day, executives took over the workday of PENNY employees as a sign of appreciation and togetherness. Right in the middle of the action, and not just on the sidelines: Niko Karras, Managing Director of PENNY Austria, personally worked at the checkout at the PENNY store in Gentzgasse 62 (1180 Vienna), while the team could enjoy a day off. To celebrate the day, he also brought a healthy snack to the adjacent Lindenhof kindergarten of the St. Nikolaus Foundation.

What would PENNY be without the people who daily ensure that shopping is more than just an everyday moment for customers? And because a simple "thank you" is often not enough, on this special day, PENNY executives took over the often hectic daily routine in a store – giving the team a well-deserved day off. This meant restocking shelves, operating the register, as well as conducting a two-hour freshness check on fruits and vegetables, or freshly baking crispy Kaiser rolls. This sent a strong message of appreciation.

This year, the choice was not made by chance to focus on the store in Gentzgasse: It was crowned the best PENNY store in Austria in an internal competition. Criteria such as optimal product availability as well as freshness of fruits & vegetables and baked goods were evaluated – areas where the Gentzgasse team particularly excelled.

“This day is not only symbolic for us – it shows that appreciation is also visible through actions. We are very proud of our teams and are happy to give back to them in this way. At the same time, it's something special for us to be back in the midst of the action – feeling close to customers, getting hands-on, and experiencing the daily routine of PENNY together with our colleagues,” said Niko Karras.

PENNY is particularly committed to its close regional roots. On the occasion of store day, Niko Karras therefore surprised the Lindenhof kindergarten of the St. Nikolaus Foundation – located directly in Gentzgasse – with a colorful, healthy snack.
