REWE Group consolidates logistics in Western Austria – focusing on the Stams site brings advantages for freshness and efficiency

REWE Group in Austria is restructuring its logistics operations in Western Austria. To this end, the warehouse in Stams (Tyrol) is being upgraded to become the central logistics hub for Tyrol and Vorarlberg, and new employees will be recruited in the coming months. The existing warehouse in Lauterach (Vorarlberg) is expected to close by mid-2026. A social plan will be put in place for the affected employees.

More freshness, more efficient transport routes

The consolidation brings numerous advantages that improve both the quality of goods supply and the efficiency of processes: product availability will increase significantly, as central storage in Stams allows for a greater number of suppliers to be integrated. This enables an expanded product range in stores, offering customers a more diverse shopping experience. Direct delivery from Stams ensures more efficient transport routes and optimized goods flows. Products reach stores faster, which has a particularly positive impact on freshness.

Logistics processes will be made more efficient overall, while local supply in the region will continue to be ensured, with a clear focus on regional products. This means greater added value for domestic suppliers, thereby strengthening local economic cycles.

Stams becomes a logistics hub

More than three-quarters of goods for Vorarlberg have already been sourced from Stams, making the consolidation a logical step. The warehouse in Stams currently has a storage area of 14,000 m². By expanding picking stations and adding shelving rows, the warehouse is being efficiently upgraded. This also creates new jobs – currently, there are 5 open positions in Stams, and up to 15 employees will be recruited in the coming months.

For the 37 affected employees in Lauterach, the social plan is in the final stages of coordination with the works council. Negotiations are constructive and take into account the specific needs of the employees, ensuring social compatibility and continued operations until the closure date. Discussions are also underway with ADEG and Sutterlüty regarding the potential hiring of employees. A follow-up use for the Lauterach site is being planned.

“With the consolidation of our logistics operations in Stams, we are creating more efficient processes and delivery routes, strengthening regional supply and cooperation with local suppliers. Direct delivery to our stores ensures greater freshness and quality – a clear advantage for our customers,” says Christian Hörner, Managing Director of REWE Lager & Transport Ges.m.b.H.
