BILLA PLUS Takes First Place in Greenpeace's Market Survey of Pastry Dispensers

Whether it’s bread, baguettes, rolls, croissants, savory snacks, or sweet pastries - the pastry dispensers at BILLA and BILLA PLUS offer customers a fresh selection of various delicacies. As part of its latest market survey, the environmental organization Greenpeace has now taken a close look at the pastry dispensers in local grocery stores. The result: The best pastry dispensers are found in BILLA PLUS stores, as they offer the widest selection of organic products made with all-plant-based ingredients and flour from Austria. BILLA and PENNY also received a “good” rating in the market check of pastry dispensers.

At a glance

  • With products of the highest organic quality, made from local flour and all-natural ingredients, the pastry dispenser at BILLA PLUS stood out in a comparison of local supermarkets.

  • In addition to the pastry dispensers, BILLA and BILLA PLUS offer a wide variety of fresh baked goods—especially in the organic section.

  • Greenpeace also gave the pastry dispensers at BILLA and PENNY a “good” rating.

Erich Szuchy, BILLA CEO: “The results of the Greenpeace market check on pastry dispensers impressively reflect our clear stance on local agriculture, plant-based products, and organic quality. We are very pleased that we achieved first place with BILLA PLUS and also about the ‘good’ rating that BILLA received from Greenpeace. It should be added that we offer significantly more baked goods in our stores than those included in the market check. At BILLA in particular, the majority of these are located outside the self-service dispensers—especially our delicious, fresh organic breads.”

BILLA PLUS: Most of the baked goods in the bakery dispenser are made with locally sourced flour

The market survey shows that the bakery display at BILLA PLUS offers an average of 13 items in the bread and baguette category, 85 percent of which use flour from Austria, 80 percent are made from purely plant-based ingredients, and more than 30 percent are organic. For rolls, buns, and similar items, more than 85 percent consist of purely plant-based ingredients, and more than 45 percent are organically produced. Savory items like cheese sticks or pizza rolls from BILLA PLUS are also impressive: 47 percent of the 15 available snacks use flour from Austria, two meet organic standards, and select stores also offer a plant-based potato burek. Among the average of 16 items in the sweet pastries category, 44 percent use domestic flour.

PENNY stands out with Austrian flour and plant-based products

PENNY also performed well in the Greenpeace market survey, achieving a commendable “good” rating. Particularly noteworthy is the high proportion of locally sourced flour: 86 percent of the flour used in bread and baguettes, over 83 percent in rolls, buns, and similar items, and a full 100 percent in savory snacks comes from Austria. In addition, all bread and baguette products are entirely plant-based, while the plant-based content for small baked goods is 83 percent. In the organic segment, the national product range currently includes three items—the organic Kornspitz, the organic spelt bread, and the organic long roll.
