The recycling sorting centre is part of a comprehensive transformation project under which the REWE Group is developing its logistics site in Wiener Neudorf into one of Europe’s most modern logistics centres by 2030, whilst utilising the existing site area. The aim is to consolidate, modernise and make the entire goods logistics process more sustainable. In future, around 2,500 sites – including BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and ADEG – will be efficiently supplied with more than 20,000 dry goods items from here.
“With the Wiener Neudorf logistics centre, we are making a targeted investment in the future viability of our supply chain in Austria whilst simultaneously strengthening the Wiener Neudorf site in the long term. We are developing a state-of-the-art logistics hub here that combines efficiency, digitalisation and sustainability, making our supply chains more robust in the long term,” emphasises Marcel Haraszti, Member of the Executive Board of REWE International AG.
Politicians also view the project as a major boost for the region. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism, emphasises: “With 615,000 employees, over 92,000 businesses and nearly 13,800 apprentices, the retail sector is one of the cornerstones of our economy. Retail ensures supply, creates jobs in all regions and is an important gateway into the labour market, particularly for young people. That is why investment in modern retail and logistics infrastructure makes a decisive contribution to competitiveness, security of supply and regional value creation. The REWE Group’s decision to invest on this scale in Wiener Neudorf is a strong commitment to Lower Austria and to Austria as a business location. The new logistics centre will create modern jobs, innovative infrastructure and set new standards for sustainable retail logistics.”
Marlene Zeidler-Beck, Member of the Lower Austrian State Parliament: “I am delighted to be here today on behalf of our Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner for the launch of the ALPHA project. A state-of-the-art, sustainable logistics centre is being built here, which is not only a clear commitment to the region and to the future, but also creates innovative jobs and thus brings new opportunities for our region.”
Recycling sorting centres as a key component of modern logistics processes
Within the overall project, the recycling sorting centre plays a key role in return and recycling logistics. This area is becoming increasingly important, particularly in light of the single-use deposit system due to come into force in 2025: more than 380 million deposit-bearing containers had already been returned to REWE retail outlets by 2025 – and the trend is rising sharply. The new centre will enable significantly more efficient sorting and return to the recycling loop in future.
The recycling sorting centre is expected to be completed and commissioned in summer 2027. From that point onwards, all processes – from sorting and waste compaction to intralogistics – will be consolidated at the new centre.
“The ground-breaking ceremony marks an important step in the further development of our logistics. With the recycling sorting centre, we are laying the foundations for efficient and sustainable return processes whilst simultaneously strengthening our entire supply chain,” explains Christian Hörner, Managing Director of Warehousing & Transport.
“A high-performance infrastructure is crucial, particularly in the context of the single-use deposit system. Our aim is to make the sorting and recycling processes as efficient and sustainable as possible – the new recycling sorting centre allows us to process up to 66,000 crates of reusable containers and around 1.5 million single-use containers per day. It is therefore a central component of the circular economy at REWE Logistics,” adds Isabella Handler, Project Manager for Warehousing & Transport.
Modern logistics opens up new opportunities
The submission plans for the entire logistics centre are due to follow in the summer of 2026. With the recycling sorting centre as the first completed phase, this major project is now visibly taking shape. At the same time, the project is already demonstrating how modern logistics, through innovation and digitalisation, is creating new challenges and opportunities – for example, through new, skilled jobs in logistics management, engineering and IT. In doing so, ALPHA is not only contributing to security of supply, but also to the development of modern career profiles at the Wiener Neudorf site.
About the construction of the REWE Group’s new ALPHA logistics centre
With the new ALPHA logistics centre in Wiener Neudorf, the REWE Group is transforming the site into a sustainable and innovative hub for retail logistics. With an investment of around 600 million euros, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in eastern Austria will be completed by 2030, securing the supply chain for the next 30 years.
The construction of the new Wiener Neudorf logistics centre is the key transformation project for goods supply in Austria. All goods flows will be consolidated in a state-of-the-art, central logistics building, built exclusively on land that is already developed. In future, around 2,500 sites will be supplied with more than 20,000 items from the dry goods range. Across approximately 150,000 m², automated warehouse solutions and digital systems enable fast and resource-efficient logistics. This is underpinned by automated high-bay warehouses with around 87,000 pallet spaces, robot-assisted order picking and intelligent, digitally controlled logistics systems.
