PENNY is giving away 1,000 free shopping trips

When shopping, many people in Austria are taking a closer look – what’s actually going into the trolley? What do you need, and what might you not need? This makes it all the more delightful when everyday life unexpectedly becomes a little easier. This is exactly what PENNY is capitalising on, just in time for the one-year anniversary of its rebranding, with a special promotion: from 7 to 12 May 2026, the discount retailer is giving away 1,000 free shopping trips to its customers in all branches across Austria. In addition, PENNY is celebrating the first birthday of its mascot WOWY, whose name was chosen by customers in a vote.

The mechanism has been deliberately kept simple: customers are selected at random and surprised with the good news at the checkout. Especially at a time when many people are having to think more carefully about their spending, this campaign really strikes a chord.

“We know that every euro saved counts. That’s why we’re constantly thinking about how we can help our customers in their everyday lives – not just through consistently low prices, but also with extra incentives and promotions that bring joy,” says Johannes Greller, Managing Director of PENNY Austria.

It is no coincidence that this campaign is taking place right now. Exactly one year ago, PENNY in Austria underwent a comprehensive brand relaunch – transforming from PENNY Markt into a contemporary, clearly positioned PENNY as a discount brand. Visually, too, a lot has changed: modernised stores, a tidy shop layout, and a new mascot, “WOWY”, who has since been guiding customers through offers and promotions as a friendly companion and is now celebrating his first birthday. The 1,000 free shopping trips are part of this anniversary.

In keeping with the new slogan “Da schau her”, PENNY is thus providing exactly the kind of surprise one rarely experiences at the checkout – a real WOW moment.
