Hof Maleninsky in Enns: A visit to Austria's only cittàslow farm

With the BILLA regionality offensive, BILLA is focusing on partnerships with local and regional producers - in this way, products from small-scale businesses should also increasingly find their way onto the shelves of BILLA stores. Around 2,800 regional and local producers already supply BILLA stores throughout Austria, with over 400 local suppliers in Upper Austria alone.

In order to further expand the close cooperation with local businesses, Thomas Steingruber, BILLA Sales Director for Upper Austria, visited the cider and brandy sommelier Karin Maleninsky in Enns. This is the only business in the whole of Austria that meets the criteria of the so-called "cittàslow" movement. "The initiative, which originated in Italy, is committed to making cities and communities more sustainable and liveable. It places particular emphasis on the preservation of old buildings and green spaces in urban areas. The prerequisite is the production of products that are processed in an exciting way and presented in a high-quality manner, giving interested parties an insight into how they are processed and created," explains Karin Maleninsky.

Hof Maleninsky is also a founding member of the first Upper Austrian cooperation of cider producers, the so-called Mosttraun4tlern. This cooperation has set itself the task of processing the cultural assets of pears and apples into quality fruit wines using modern cellar technology and preserving orchards as landscape-defining elements. "By working with companies such as Hof Maleninsky, which are committed to sustainability and regionality, we create several advantages at the same time: we offer our customers products of the highest quality, promote sustainable agriculture and also strengthen regional value creation. This is the essence of what BILLA stands for as a brand," says BILLA Sales Director Thomas Steingruber.
