With DisAbility Day on December 4 to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3), REWE Group is sending a visible signal for "DisAbility Confidence" and thus for the rights and concerns of employees and customers with disabilities. On Open House Day at the REWE Group headquarters in Wiener Neudorf, self-advocates with disabilities and organizations from the disability sector raised awareness for the topic of inclusion. REWE Group is thus contributing to the global #PurpleLightUp campaign, which uses the color "purple" to set an example around the world for equal rights, economic self-determination and participation of people with disabilities.

In Austria, more than 15 percent of people live with a disability and fight against prejudices and barriers in everyday life and at work every day. "As REWE Group, we are committed to inclusion and the self-determined participation of people with disabilities all year round and want to contribute to breaking down barriers. Every day, more than 900 employees with disabilities in all parts of REWE Group show us anew how valuable their contribution is to the REWE family," says Marcel Haraszti, member of the Management Board of REWE International AG.

This is also reflected in numerous projects designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to work or shop at REWE Group retail companies. For example, the number of "quiet hour stores" for low-stimulus shopping for people with autism at BILLA tripled in 2023. Measures are taken at set times to enable a shopping experience in a stress-reduced environment. Other highlights include the offer of free online orders for people with disabilities at BIPA and the expansion of accessibility, e.g. in the BIPA store on Hoher Markt.

Open house with station operation for more understanding of everyday life with restrictions

Various activities and information stands will be offered on DisAbility Day to promote a deeper understanding of different impairments. In addition to sign language and Braille, visitors will be able to see the world through the eyes of visually impaired people using simulation glasses. In addition, the psychosocial services offer information about mental illnesses and limitations. "This day makes it possible to learn more about the experiences and perspectives of people with disabilities in our team and at the same time promotes understanding and appreciation for the diversity in our community," says Herbert Valentan, Group Representative for People with Disabilities at REWE International AG.
