BILLA Apprentice Week: 188 apprentices independently manage BILLA stores!

Giving the talents of tomorrow an insight into their future workplace while gaining valuable practical experience is the successful concept behind BILLA's Apprentice Week “Apprentices run stores”. For the 12th time in a row, the food retailer is letting selected apprentices take responsibility for seven BILLA stores in Austria for a week.

From June 10 to 14, 2024, 188 apprentices will demonstrate their leadership skills and manage BILLA stores in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Salzburg and Carinthia.

This year, a total of 188 apprentices are taking part in the campaign. The following locations are taking part: Ungargasse 52, 1030 Vienna, Mariahilfer Straße 186-188, 1150 Vienna, Josef Dunkl-Straße 31-33, 2130 Mistelbach, Ägydiplatz 2, 4600 Thalheim bei Wels, Maxglaner Hauptstraße 18, 5020 Salzburg, Grottenhofstraße 94, 8052 Graz and Karawankenweg 38, 9500 Villach.

Harald Mießner, BILLA Board Member for Sales: “Our BILLA and BILLA PLUS stores thrive on the personal service provided by our employees and apprentices - they are the heart of our locations. To ensure that this remains the case, we invest in the training of apprentices and offer them excellent training, an attractive apprentice salary, crisis-proof jobs and benefits during their apprenticeship, such as an internship abroad and 'Apprentices lead stores'. In this way, we want to offer additional positive incentives and meet the increasing demand for qualified employees ourselves."

Elke Peller-Kühne, Head of Human Resources Management at BILLA AG: “As one of the largest apprentice trainers in Austria, we see it as our central task to prepare the managers of tomorrow for their upcoming professional lives in the best possible way. One of the ways we do this is with the BILLA Apprentice Week 'Apprentices lead markets' - a really special highlight in the course of the year that has been very well received by both the teams and our customers in previous years. We are delighted to be able to give over 180 apprentices this opportunity again this year to take a look at their professional future, take the lead and grow as a team in the face of new challenges."

Varied apprentice week with interesting tasks

The 188 apprentices who will be taking part in “Apprentices run stores” from June 10 have actively applied to their store manager or sales manager in advance or have been suggested to take part by BILLA's apprentice support team. While the junior staff take over the management of the selected stores, the employees who usually work at the locations help out in other stores or enjoy their well-deserved vacation. This gives the apprentices the opportunity to take over all areas - from fruit & vegetables, delicatessen, checkout and warehouse management - on their own to gain new experience and knowledge about their day-to-day work.

The yellow of the job - apprentices have many career opportunities at BILLA

BILLA offers apprentices a wide range of apprenticeships in the BILLA and BILLA PLUS stores. Around 1,700 apprentices are currently undergoing training at BILLA - 58 percent of whom are female. There are ten apprenticeships to choose from - including retail sales assistant with a focus on food, delicatessen or digital sales, dual apprenticeships as a retail sales assistant or office clerk, or training as a confectioner. Most apprentices are trained as retail sales assistants with a focus on food. There is also an apprenticeship with a school-leaving certificate and the option of an internship abroad. They are all offered an above-average apprentice salary.

It is important to BILLA to promote the individual strengths of the junior staff and therefore relies on individually tailored packages of measures such as intensive tutoring courses or sales training if required. BILLA rewards vocational school graduates and apprentices with good grades with attractive bonuses. After successfully completing their apprenticeship, apprentices are free to apply for the “Future Talents” junior management program - after just one more year of further training, they become managers.

This year, 520 new apprentices have already started their training at BILLA, and more than 400 vacancies are still waiting to be filled by young, motivated people. Special consideration is also given to training young people with disabilities. BILLA has built up a strong cooperation network over many years and currently employs 276 integrative apprentices.
