Press Release 27th December 2024

REWE Group Austria achieves new record in apprenticeship training

With around 2,400 apprentices at BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA, PENNY and the central companies, REWE Group Austria plays a pioneering role in apprenticeship training. Despite a decline in the total number of apprentices in Austrian retail by around 6 per cent from 14,864 trained apprentices at the end of 2023 to 14,015 in 2024, REWE Group Austria was able to increase its number of apprentices, demonstrating its strong commitment to promoting young talent.

Without REWE Group, the number of apprentices in the retail sector would actually fall by more than eight per cent. ‘It is important to us to offer young people stable and future-proof training. Apprentice training was, is and will remain a key pillar of our corporate philosophy,’ emphasises Marcel Haraszti, Management Board member of REWE International AG.

Record growth in apprenticeship training - BILLA convinces

BILLA in particular stands out with a significant increase in the number of apprentices: with 1,899 apprentices, 273 more people were trained than in the previous year, including the next generation of BILLA merchants - an increase of around 17 per cent. At BIPA, the number of apprentices also grew by around seven per cent from 185 in 2023 to 199 apprentices in 2024. PENNY was able to recruit 30 new apprentices this year and plans to take on a total of around 70 additional trainees by September 2025. PENNY is also pursuing the long-term goal of developing young talents in the stores after their apprenticeship.

15 years of REWE Group classes: Success story in the dual training system

Close cooperation with vocational schools is a central component of training at REWE Group. REWE Group classes have been in existence for 15 years, offering particularly practical and high-quality training programmes through in-depth cooperation with schools. Rosemarie Glieber is responsible for the REWE Group classes: ‘This model shows how important strong partnerships are for success in the dual training system. We are delighted that this concept opens up additional prospects for young talents.’

Diverse job profiles and attractive extras

REWE Group offers a total of 20 job profiles - from retail and operational logistics to innovative areas such as application development and coding. Apprentices also have access to a wide range of additional benefits such as bonuses for special achievements, internships abroad, further training and events. Extended apprenticeship periods or partial qualifications that cater to the individual needs of young people are also an important part of promoting young talent. In order to optimally prepare young people for their final apprenticeship examinations, BILLA also offers intermediate apprenticeship examinations in the second year of training.

Another special feature is the training to become a Genussland OÖ regional ambassador, which has been part of the training programme for two years. The first graduates are expected in 2025, and REWE Group is already planning the further development of this unique specialisation.
