Fit for the future: BILLA and BIPA focus on digitalisation and standardisation in private label packaging data management

BILLA and BIPA are committed to optimising packaging data management for their own brands. The aim is to establish digitised and standardised packaging management. The new Packaging Ordinance (PPWR), which came into force in February 2025, is part of the European Union's Green Deal and standardises packaging requirements within the EU. The key requirements of the PPWR include reducing packaging, improving recyclability and recycled content, standardising labelling and increasing reusability. A central aspect of implementing these requirements is the mandatory and systematic collection of packaging data. BILLA and BIPA are receiving support from the Austrian company Packaging Cockpit GmbH to successfully implement these measures.

At a glance

  • Packaging data for BILLA and BIPA own-brand products to be bundled and digitised in the future, organised in the ‘Packaging Cockpit’ software

  • Digital recording enables transparency, timeliness and efficiency along the entire supply chain.

  • Both companies are thus implementing measures to comply with the new EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR).

Measurable and comparable data is crucial for an effective packaging strategy. Everyone along the entire packaging value chain must pull together to create transparency. The Green Packaging Management department in the Private Label Product Management division offers Billa and Bipa private label suppliers the opportunity to digitally transmit the packaging data of private label products using the Packaging Cockpit Tool. The focus is on particularly simple and efficient handling.

Andreas W. Streit, Head of Sustainability at REWE International: "Packaging is much more than just a wrapper – it is a key lever on the path to greater sustainability. The PPWR requires transparency, clarity and responsibility along the entire supply chain – and that's exactly where we come in: we are already starting to record the packaging data of our own-brand products at BILLA and BIPA in a structured and digital manner. Together with Packaging Cockpit, we are laying the foundation for a new packaging landscape – data-based, efficient and sustainable."
