At today's official press conference, the REWE Group announced that construction of its new logistics centre in Wiener Neudorf will begin in the second quarter of 2026. By 2030, the REWE Group will transform the existing site into a sustainable, innovative logistics centre with state-of-the-art storage technologies. From there, the company will supply its BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and ADEG stores, as well as cooperation partners such as petrol station shops, with tens of thousands of products from its dry goods range, which comprises a total of around 100,000 items throughout Austria. The new logistics centre will consolidate all goods traffic for the site in one building. The REWE Group is thus creating new potential for strengthening supply security and improving economic and ecological efficiency across the entire supply chain.
"With this logistics centre, we are sending a clear signal for Austria as a business location and investing in the future of food supply. In Wiener Neudorf, we are creating one of the most modern retail logistics platforms in Europe, which will be a sustainable and resilient backbone for our supply chain,‘ emphasises Marcel Haraszti, CEO of REWE International AG. ’We are consolidating our goods flows, reducing transport volumes, increasing supply security and creating new jobs for highly qualified employees in logistics, technology and IT."
Flagship project for the economy, climate and security of supply
The logistics centre, which will be built exclusively on already developed land, will become the new heart of REWE Logistics in Austria by 2030 and, at the same time, a flagship project for the 2030 logistics strategy. The measures to achieve the strategic goals – strengthening supply security and reducing CO2 emissions along the entire supply chain – will be implemented in Wiener Neudorf in accordance with the latest standards. Thanks to the high degree of digitalisation at the logistics centre and hybrid technical solutions, the REWE Group is streamlining transport routes and goods flows with the new logistics centre, which will enable even closer cooperation with regional partners in the future. The concept also focuses on energy efficiency, self-sufficiency and a high level of demand coverage through renewable energy.
With the new logistics centre and the expansion of its logistical capabilities, the REWE Group is creating new, highly skilled jobs in logistics, technology and IT. The REWE Group is working with specialist WITRON to optimise its intralogistics processes. The storage processes and systems for the new Wiener Neudorf logistics centre were also designed in collaboration with this partner.
Mikl-Leitner: ‘Strong signal for Lower Austria’
The project was also welcomed by politicians at today's press launch. In her statement, Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasised the importance of the investment for Lower Austria: "The REWE Group's investment in the location is a strong signal for Lower Austria. It shows that our province is attractive to international companies – thanks to reliable framework conditions and good infrastructure. With its investment in a state-of-the-art, digitalised logistics centre with high sustainability standards, the REWE Group is demonstrating how courageous entrepreneurship and innovation can strengthen regional value creation and the labour market."
Highest standards of innovation, vision for the future and resilience
Thanks to a hybrid logistics strategy, almost a third of all goods deliveries in Austria will be handled in Wiener Neudorf on 150,000 square metres in future. The structures, which were previously spread across several buildings, will be consolidated into a central high-performance building: thanks to detailed advance planning using state-of-the-art data analysis, robotics technology in goods picking and a combination of manual, semi-automated and fully automated systems, more goods can be delivered in less time and in a more space-efficient manner in future. This also includes a fully automated high-bay warehouse with approx. 87,000 pallet spaces and a delivery capacity of approx. 116 million order units per year. This can only be achieved with a large team of dedicated employees on site. In addition, the location will have its own recycling centre for sustainable take-back and recycling management. The 12,500 square metre photovoltaic area will cover approximately 20 per cent of the logistics centre's annual energy requirements in the first expansion stage currently planned.
"We are building the infrastructure of tomorrow here – embedded in our entire network in Austria. The central goals of the REWE Group's Logistics Strategy 2030 are to strengthen supply security and reduce CO2 emissions along the entire supply chain,‘ explains Christian Hörner, Managing Director of Warehousing & Transport at REWE International AG. ’The logistics centre in Wiener Neudorf is a major step towards achieving these goals and will be groundbreaking for the REWE Group's international trade logistics."
Isabella Handler, overall project manager at REWE International AG, emphasises the importance of technological implementation: ‘From the outset, our aim was to create a forward-looking logistics platform that combines efficiency, sustainability and security of supply. By bundling logistics in Wiener Neudorf, we are also setting the highest standards in the digitalisation and automation of retail logistics.’
‘We see it as our responsibility to think not only about today, but also about the coming decades,’ summarises Marcel Haraszti. ‘This centre will change the way we think about healthcare – making it more sustainable, more digital and more resilient.’
