SkillsFactory25: Apprentices of REWE Group strengthen their social competencies

On July 16 and 17, apprentices from all over Austria participated in personality development workshops in Schladming alongside top executives.

At a glance

  • Personal development is a central component of the apprenticeship training at BILLA, BILLA PLUS, PENNY, BIPA, ADEG, and Sutterlüty.

  • Over 590 apprentices from all federal states and retail companies took part in the two intensive seminar days.

  • The direct exchange between apprentices and top management is actively promoted through the annual SkillsFactory format.

The REWE Group Austria held another successful event with SkillsFactory25 to promote personal and social skills. On July 16 and 17, 590 apprentices from all federal states and retail companies came together in Schladming, accompanied by around 35 guests, including Marcel Haraszti, Board Member of REWE International AG.

Once a year, the REWE Group invites all apprentices from BILLA, BILLA PLUS, PENNY, BIPA, ADEG, Sutterlüty, and its training companies to a personality seminar at the headquarters. This year, there were 30 diverse workshops to choose from – ranging from “Mindfulness: Never Stress Again” to “Communication Training with Horses” to “Using AI for the Right Learning Strategy.”

“Our employees and apprentices have the opportunity to train individually according to their interests, motivation, and suitability. We invest early in the personal and professional development of our colleagues and offer a comprehensive training program,” said Arnd Riehl, Head of REWE Group People & Culture. Marcel Haraszti, Board Member of REWE International AG, added: “These two days are particularly valuable for young people. They learn important social skills in an inspiring environment that strengthen them both in their professional lives and in everyday life. At the same time, we create space for direct dialogue with top management.” About 25 top executives – including all board members and managing directors of the retail companies and central areas of the REWE Group in Austria – were present and attended the workshops alongside the apprentices.

Record number of apprentices

With around 2,400 apprentices at BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA, PENNY, and the central companies, the REWE Group Austria is a leader in apprenticeship training. While the overall number of apprentices in Austrian retail is declining by about 6 percent, the REWE Group Austria employed 12 percent more apprentices in 2024. The training professions include retail with focuses such as food trading, perfumery, and delicatessen sales, as well as an additional focus on "Digital Sales." Other training fields include food technology, business logistics management, metal engineering/machine engineering, system catering specialist, and pastry chef. PENNY also offers training for butchers.

REWE International AG provides training according to the latest standards. Additionally, there are numerous further training and advancement opportunities within the REWE Group Austria. Apprentices also benefit from perks such as bonuses for special achievements, internships abroad, excursions, and pay above the collective agreement.
