Ordered online, delivered directly: PENNY and foodora celebrate online retail milestone

Online retail is booming in Austria and PENNY is showing how successful the combination of traditional food retail and digital delivery logistics can be. Since the start of the collaboration six months ago, a significant milestone has already been reached: over 1,000 orders were delivered in one day. The delivery service is particularly popular in Vienna. Especially in the often stressful pre-Christmas period, it can be a great relief to have your PENNY shopping conveniently delivered to your home.

‘Our aim is to offer customers a stress-free and fast shopping experience that combines convenience and quality - and at the same fair prices as in our more than 300 shops,’ explains Kai Pataky, Managing Director of PENNY Austria.

Vienna as the No.1 ordering hotspot

60% of Viennese order from delivery services every month. The capital therefore plays a key role in the success of PENNY's online offering. Since the launch in Vienna, the cooperation with foodora has continued to develop and the delivery area has been expanded to Graz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg due to increasing demand. The foodora Trend Monitor 2024 shows: Almost half of Austrians (44.2%) order from a delivery service at least once a month, and in Vienna the figure is almost 60%. This makes PENNY one of the leading providers in the capital when it comes to fast and fresh food deliveries. When everyday life gets stressful again or things get busy before Christmas, shopping can be simple and uncomplicated - PENNY and foodora make it possible.

During Advent and the festive season, meat dishes such as goose, beef roast, or turkey are popular classics. The right meat can be pre-ordered at PENNY with the click of a button: At penny.at/vorbestellen, desired products can be individually ordered – either natural or marinated – and picked up at one of the 228 stores with butcher service at the preferred time during opening hours.

Kaisersemmel, Energy Drinks, and Mineral Water in First Place

The top sellers are the "Ich bin Österreich" Kaisersemmel (1st place) as well as other baked goods, sparkling mineral water, soft drinks, and energy drinks.

PENNY and foodora plan to further expand their offerings and increase the efficiency of their delivery service. “As pioneers in quick commerce for PENNY's affordable groceries throughout Austria, we are setting new standards together. This fantastic collaboration allows us to provide customers with a unique shopping experience – fast, straightforward, and affordable. We are thrilled with the successes so far and look forward to the exciting opportunities the future holds,” says foodora Managing Director Alexander Gaied.

In general, online grocery orders are continuously increasing. In 2024, 9.3% of the population already orders their groceries online at least weekly. Men and young adults aged 18 to 29 exhibit a particularly high affinity for online shopping.
